AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Rwanda Stuns Nigeria
Our reporter
The Uyo Stadium in Akwa Ibom witnessed an upset as Rwanda defeated Nigeria 2-1 in their AFCON 2025 qualifier, dealing a rare home loss to the Super Eagles.
Despite having already secured their place in the tournament, Nigeria's performance raised questions as Rwanda fought back to claim all three points.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 59th minute when Samuel Chukwueze sliced through the Rwandan defense with a dazzling solo run before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. The Super Eagles appeared to have control of the game, but Rwanda had other plans.
The turning point came in the 72nd minute when Ange Mutsinzi powered in a header from a well-delivered free kick, levelling the score. Just three minutes later, Innocent Nshuti capitalised on a defensive lapse to put Rwanda ahead, finishing from close range.
Nigeria, despite their dominance in possession, struggled to convert their chances and looked disjointed following the eight changes made to the squad that recently triumphed over Benin Republic.
Rwanda’s resolute defending frustrated the hosts, who failed to mount a significant comeback.
While the Super Eagles’ qualification for AFCON 2025 is secured, the loss has sparked debate over the squad's depth and tactical approach. For Rwanda, the victory boosts morale and showcases their resilience against one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
