Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and the people of Edo State following the passing of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria's oldest Catholic priest, who died at the age of 104.
In a statement issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Senator Okpebholo described Monsignor Oleghe as a beacon of faith and service whose life exemplified humility, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to humanity.
“Monsignor Oleghe’s contributions to the Church and society are immeasurable. His life serves as a profound lesson in humility, selflessness, and the power of faith. Although he lived a long and fulfilled life, his passing leaves a significant void in the Catholic Community and beyond,” the governor stated.
Born in Igiode town, Agenebode, in Etsako East Local Government Area, Monsignor Oleghe was a spiritual leader and mentor to many. His remarkable life, which spanned over a century, was marked by a commitment to service that positively impacted countless lives.
Governor Okpebholo extended his deepest sympathies to the family of the late priest, the Auchi Diocese, and the Catholic faithful across the country. He also prayed for God’s strength to guide them through this period of mourning and for the repose of Monsignor Oleghe’s soul.
“On behalf of the government and people of Edo State, I join the Catholic faithful in celebrating a life well lived. May God grant Monsignor Oleghe eternal rest and comfort all those grieving his loss,” the statement concluded.
