South African songstress, Tyla defeats Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, others to win two major BILLBOARD awards
South African sensation Tyla continues to make waves on the global stage, clinching two major accolades at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards on December 12.
The
22-year-old artist was named Top Afrobeats Artiste, surpassing Nigerian
heavyweights Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake. The award highlights her
meteoric rise in a category long dominated by Nigeria’s Afrobeat
powerhouses.
Tyla's
chart-topping hit, Water, further secured her the award for Top Afrobeats Song,
triumphing over notable contenders such as Adam Port & Stryv featuring
Malachiii (Move) and Tems (Me & U).
This latest
recognition follows an incredible year for the 'Water' singer. In February,
Tyla made history by winning the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music
Performance, becoming the youngest African artist to earn a Grammy at just 22
years old.
Speaking
after her double win, Tyla expressed her gratitude to fans and collaborators
worldwide, saying, "This is proof that African music is limitless, and I’m
so honoured to represent South Africa on this global stage."
With her
growing list of accolades and groundbreaking achievements, Tyla is solidifying
her position as a leading voice in Afrobeats and a trailblazer for African
music worldwide.
