Former President Olusegun Obasanjo hosted prominent political figures, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over the weekend.
The meeting, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), has drawn significant public attention amidst speculations about its implications for Nigeria’s political future.
Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, revealed details of the meeting via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday evening. According to Kwankwaso, the discussion centred on “key national issues,” particularly the trajectory of politics and governance in Nigeria.
“I was pleased to be in the company of my friend, His Excellency Donald Duke, and other associates to pay a courtesy call on President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta,” Kwankwaso wrote. “Deliberations on significant national issues, including the future of politics and governance in Nigeria, defined the conversation. We are grateful to Baba for his warm support and hospitality.”
While no specific details of their discussions were disclosed, political analysts believe the meeting might have touched on strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections, given the roles both Kwankwaso and Obasanjo have played in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
This visit marks yet another interaction between Obasanjo and Kwankwaso in recent months. In November, the former president was a notable guest at the wedding of Kwankwaso’s daughter in Kano, where he was seen wearing a red cap symbolic of the Kwankwasiyya Movement. The event brought together key political and business leaders, further cementing the ties between the two statesmen.
Donald Duke, a respected figure in Nigerian politics and a former presidential aspirant, joined Kwankwaso for the visit, underscoring the potential significance of the gathering. Though no formal statements have emerged on any political alignments or decisions, the meeting is being closely watched as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
Observers note that Obasanjo remains a pivotal figure in Nigerian politics, often consulted for his insights and influence in national matters. This recent gathering highlights the continued importance of alliances and dialogue in shaping the nation’s future.
