Tragic Loss: Akwa Ibom State Mourns Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, has passed away. According to reports from The Nation, Ayilara succumbed to his illness in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

Sources close to the family revealed that Ayilara had undergone surgery for prostate cancer on Wednesday, only to tragically pass away mere hours later. 

"We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead," the family was quoted as saying.


The news of his demise was further confirmed by a senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter. Ayilara had recently taken over the reins in Akwa Ibom State in February 2024, following his deployment by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.


Ayilara's career was marked by significant roles within the police force. He had previously served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department and later assumed the role of Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023.


His sudden death has left the law enforcement community and residents of Akwa Ibom State in mourning. Tributes have begun pouring in, highlighting Ayilara's dedication and professionalism during his tenure.
