The Shocking Reasons Behind Dogs Locking During Intercourse

A recent study by experts has explained the biological phenomenon behind why dogs "lock" or "tie" during mating.

This natural process, known as the "copulatory tie", plays a crucial role in canine reproduction, ensuring successful fertilization.

During mating, the male dog's penis swells due to the 'bulbus glandis', a specialized part of the reproductive organ, which causes it to become locked inside the female's vagina.

This swelling, coupled with hormonal changes in both dogs, facilitates the copulatory tie, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to over half an hour.

This process, while often alarming to onlookers, is an instinctual behaviour that has evolved to maximize reproductive success in dogs. The tie ensures that sperm is effectively deposited in the female's reproductive tract, significantly increasing the chances of fertilization.

Veterinarians stress that this behaviour is entirely natural and not harmful to either dog. Dog owners are advised to avoid interfering with the process, as attempting to separate the dogs forcibly could lead to injury.

Understanding this natural aspect of canine behaviour can help pet owners better care for their dogs and prevent unnecessary concern during mating.
