Emirate Tussle: Emir Sanusi Defies Police, Hosts Durbar After Eid Prayers

Kano- In a bold move that underscores the ongoing tension in Kano State's Emirship tussle, reinstated Emir Muhammad Sanusi II defied a police ban to conduct a mini durbar following Eid el-Kabir prayers.

The controversial event took place on Sunday, despite directives from the Kano State Police Command prohibiting durbar activities.

The day began with the two rival emirs leading separate Eid prayers, highlighting the deepening divide in the state's traditional leadership. Emir Sanusi II led his congregation at the Kofar Mata Juma’at Mosque, accompanied by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who attended due to inclement weather conditions.

In a parallel event, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero conducted his prayers at the Nassarawa Mini Palace Mosque.

After the prayers, Emir Sanusi II proceeded to Gidan Shettima Palace at Kofar Kwaru to host a mini durbar, directly challenging the police's ban. This act of defiance not only highlights the resilience of Emir Sanusi II but also the ongoing struggle for authority and influence within Kano's emirate system.

Governor Yusuf, who was present at the prayers with Emir Sanusi II, addressed the public afterwards, calling for peace and urging residents to continue their daily activities lawfully. He stressed the importance of maintaining harmony in the state, despite the ongoing leadership dispute.

The governor also revealed a significant lapse in coordination, stating that the police had not consulted him before announcing the ban on durbar activities.

This lack of communication between state authorities has further complicated the situation, contributing to the tense atmosphere.

In a contrasting scene, Ahmad Yakasai, a former commissioner in Kano State who attended the prayers with Emir Bayero, expressed gratitude for the relative peace that has prevailed despite the conflict over the Emirship.

His comments reflect the hope that calm will continue to prevail even amidst the ongoing leadership battle.

The emirate tussle in Kano State remains a complex and sensitive issue, with both Emir Sanusi II and Emir Bayero continuing to assert their claims to the throne. As the state navigates these turbulent waters, the call for unity and peaceful coexistence remains paramount.
