Death of DPO Not Connected to Masquerade's Arrest - Police

From Felix Mordi

The Ogun State Police Command has frowned at the news making the rounds concerning the demise of the Ibara Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Abeokuta, the state capital, SP Segun Dada, which has been attributed to the after effect of the arrest of a masquerade by the division.

Describing the news as not just frivolous, the Command said it was mischievous and unfounded, adding that the late officer had been battling with a life-threatening ailment and was bed-ridden for upward of one month before he finally gave up the ghost last weekend.

In a statement made available to Crime Puzzle, the Command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, noted in dismay how the arrest of a masquerade was linked to the death of the officer, who was not even aware of the goings-on at the station.

"To those circulating the unfunded rumour, your mischievous information will not deter us from carrying out our constitutional duty, no matter who is involved", the PPRO stated, adding that "If pastors and imams could be arrested for violating government's directives, no masequrade should think of being above the law"

According to the state police image maker, "The masequrade was arrested on Sunday, the 29th of March, 2020 for violating the government directives while the DPO was on sick bed at the Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, until he breathed his last. He was not even aware of the said masequrade's arrest".

His words, "the Command's attention was drawn to a mischievous information circulating on social media, attributing the untimely death of one of the finest, humble and dedicated officers of the Command to the recent arrest of a recalcitrant masequrade, who violated the social distancing directives of the federal and state governments", adding that it was not in the habit of the Command to join issues with those circulating  the fake news but that it was just pertinent to clarify this particular issue with peddlers of the wrong and mischievous impression.

He said: "The late DPO had been on sick bed for the past one month, battling with an ailment which later resulted to his untimely death. Contrary to what the mischief maker wanted the public to believe, the late DPO was not on duty when the said masequrade was arrested, because he was in the hospital.

"It will be ignorant of anyone to attribute his death to the arrest of the recalcitrant masequrade just to attract traffic to his or her blog. Anybody who might have had reasons to meet the late DPO when he was alive, would attest to his humble and polite nature. He was an embodiment of what a gentleman officer should be and the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Police Command in particular will forever miss him", Oyeyemi maintained.
