Nigeria’s U17 Women’s National Football Team, the Flamingos,
began their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory
over New Zealand.
The match, held at the CFC Stadium in Santiago De Los
Caballeros, saw the Nigerian team take charge early, scoring three goals in the
first half and solidifying their dominance throughout the game.
Nigeria's lead came quickly, with Shakirat Moshood opening
the scoring just two minutes in, assisted by Harmony Chidi. Khadijat Adegoke
doubled the lead in the 13th minute with a powerful strike that New Zealand
goalkeeper Brooke Neary couldn't keep out.
Faridat Abdulwahab’s long-range effort later put Nigeria
three goals ahead before halftime. Taiwo Afolabi completed the tally early in
the second half, heading in a cross from Adegoke to seal the win.
Despite a late consolation goal by New Zealand, Nigeria
controlled the game in every aspect, dominating possession and outshooting
their opponents.
Following the impressive victory, the Honourable Minister of
Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, extended his heartfelt
congratulations to the team.
He praised the Flamingos for their outstanding performance,
saying, “The Flamingos have made Nigeria proud with their fantastic display.
This victory reflects the incredible talent and determination of our young
female athletes.”
The Minister also commended the coaching staff and the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their commitment to developing women’s
football in Nigeria.
“This result is a testament to the hard work and dedication
of everyone involved in the team's preparation. It is crucial that we continue
to support women’s sports to ensure their continued success,” he added.
Senator Enoh called on all Nigerians to rally behind the
Flamingos as they advance in the tournament. “Let’s unite as a nation to
support our girls in their pursuit of greater achievements. They are
representing Nigeria on the global stage, and our collective support will
inspire them further,” he said.
The Flamingos, who secured the bronze medal in the last FIFA
U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, are now well-positioned for another strong
showing in the tournament.
The Minister expressed confidence in their ability to
advance far, wishing them continued success in their upcoming matches.
