Governor Obaseki Orders Arrest of Illegal Miners, Issues Stern Warning on Environmental Hazards

Edo State– The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has ordered the arrest of individuals involved in unauthorized mining operations.

This directive comes amid rising concerns over the environmental hazards posed by such activities, particularly the illegal excavation of borrow pits.

During an assessment visit to an illegal excavation site at Obagie N'Evbosa in Ikpoba Okha local government area, Governor Obaseki expressed his alarm at the detrimental impact of these operations on the environment.
Borrow pits, which are sites where materials such as sand, gravel, or soil are removed for use in construction and other projects, have become a significant environmental issue in the state due to unregulated and illegal activities.
Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental regulations and called on federal mining officers in Edo State to cease authorizing illegal mining operations.
He underscored that no further authorizations should be granted until a comprehensive agreement is reached on designated areas for borrowing, ensuring that such activities are conducted in a manner that minimizes environmental damage.
"The unchecked excavation activities we have witnessed here today pose severe risks to our environment and communities," Governor Obaseki stated during his visit.
"We must take immediate action to halt these illegal operations and hold those responsible accountable."
