Auchi Poly Alerts Students, Staff on Lassa Fever Outbreak

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, has warned the students and staff of the institution on the ongoing Lassa Fever outbreak in the polytechnic community, urging them to take precautionary means to protect themselves.

In a statement issued and signed by the Director of Medical Services of the Institution , Dr. Dauda Ahmed, a copy of which was obtained by this blog, tasks the students to report early to the hospital when they have any fever that is not responding to antimalaria or fever taking too long to subside or when bleeding is noticed.
The statement reads in part: "I wish to alert the Polytechnic Community of the recent and ongoing outbreak of Lassa Fever disease in the Polytechnic Community. LASSA FEVER is a Viral Hemorrhagic disease cause by THE LASSA VIRUS. It is very contagious similar to that of Ebola Viral disease caused by Ebola virus. This disease is caused by RATS that defecate on exposed food items and uncovered utensil.

The disease mimics SYMPTOMS OF COMMON FEVER (Malaria, Typhoid and others); with headache, sore throat, muscular pains, chest pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough and abdominal pains. Later stages of the disease include bleeding from the orifices."
The statement added that proper hygiene and sanitation around houses should be undertaken by all and sundry.
"We should live in a rat proof house to prevent contact with rats." It furthered.
