Ember month: Auto crash claims 22 souls in Ogun


A tragic truck-induced accident on Wednesday, has led to the death of about 22 persons in Ogun State. The accident, was occasioned by brake failure of a MAN Diesel truck with registration number KAB 97 XA.


According to eye witness account, truck was said to be heading towards Ibadan, from Lagos axis, developed a mechanical brake malfunctioning at a diversion axis, after Saapade bridge, and collided with two fully-loaded oncoming commercial buses, a MAZDA, marked KTU 93 XU and a TOYOTA, marked KEY 97 XA, killing 13, while 13 others sustained a varying degree of injuries.


Corps Commander of the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement (TRACE), Seni Ogunyemi told journalists that, within five minutes of the accident, which occurred at 1725hrs, rescue team comprising TRACE, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Motor Traffic Department (MTD), of the Police from Ode-Remo, were already at the scene.

He gave the analysis of the injured victims as13 (7 male adults and 6 female adults) while the dead were also 13, made up of (4 male adults, 7 female adults and 2 female kids), an indication that only six of the 32 people involved in the accident escaped unhurt.


The injured victims, according to him, were rescued to the State Hospital, Isara and Victory Hospital, Ogere while the presumed dead persons were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.


"Out of the 7 injured victims rescued to State Hospital, Isara, one female was confirmed dead by doctor and deposited at the hospital morgue while the remaining victims were given treatment and discharged. Also, out of the 6 victims rescued to Victory Hospital, Ogere, one female was confirmed dead by doctor and deposited at FOS Mortuary Ipara while the remaining victims were given treatment and discharged, bringing the number of deaths in the accident to 15", stated the PCR.
