Dr. Emadomi Moses Igbape, has urged Nigerian government to leverage on the tremendous advancement of IT and computer technologies to revive the dwindling standard of education and poor academic performance in the country. He explained that the move will make education attractive at all levels.
Dr. Igape, a Chief Lecturer and Head, Management Information System of the institution made this plea on Wednesday at the Polytechnic, Auchi while delivering an inaugural lecture titled: " Information Technology: Antidote to Cancerous Ailment in Nigeria Education System" to mark the 5th inaugural lecture in the polytechnic.
Igbape pointed out that the problem government has is in reconciling access with quality in the provision of education.
According to him; education today must have the effect of making it possible for a country to have a steady supply of highly creative citizens who help to keep improving the living conditions of the general citizenry and to solve the existential problems that are thrown from time to time. The problems, he said, are now being further complicated by the theory and reality of global village.
He said: added to globalisation issues in education, quality assurance has drawn concerns from governments, industry and other stakeholders in international education, saying every institution strives to have a fair share of the global market and gain competitive advantage. This he explained can be realizable if Nigerian graduates can compete favourably with their counterparts elsewhere.
He noted that the dwindling standard of education in nigeria has been attributed to lack of adequate commitment by those who are charged with the responsibility to impart knowledge through quality teaching as well as the attitude of government toward proper funding of education as required by the United Nations standard.
The lecturer, however, recommends that, government should put in place appropriate legislations for proper integration of IT tools in the management of the Nigerian education sector as only correct development and application of IT facilities can be the hope of survival of education in Nigeria.
He advised that there should be proper funding of IT-related research projects and sponsorship for production and use of the products of these research.
He thanked the school management for the successful organisation of the Lecture. Highlight of the event was the entertainment of guests at the Philipa Idogho event centre.
