Stop using detergent, harmful chemicals in ‘Fufu’production, Nigerian govt warns citizens

The Rivers State Government has raised alarm over the disturbing trend of harmful chemicals, including detergents, being used in the production of fufu, a popular Nigerian dish made from fermented cassava.

In a public health advisory issued from Port Harcourt, the Ministry of Health expressed grave concern following reports suggesting that some fufu producers were adding detergents to the cassava paste to speed up the processing time and increase profits.

The advisory, which was signed by Dr. Ndubisi Akpuh, Director of Public Health and Disease Control, on behalf of Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, strongly condemned this practice and outlined the severe health risks it posed to consumers.

Detergents, commonly used in cleaning and laundry, contain toxic chemicals that can cause severe poisoning when ingested. The advisory warned that symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea could occur immediately, while prolonged exposure could result in more severe health complications, including damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs.

In extreme cases, the use of such chemicals in food production could also cause internal bleeding, ulcers, and damage to the digestive system. Furthermore, some detergents contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals that may harm reproductive health and increase the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer.

The advisory also stressed that the use of non-food-grade substances in food production violates both national and international food safety regulations. Offenders face potential legal actions, including fines, business closures, or even imprisonment.

The Ministry of Health urged fufu producers to adhere strictly to food safety guidelines and to use only approved, food-grade ingredients. They also called on consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food processing activities to the authorities.

In closing, the Ministry pledged to work closely with regulatory bodies to enhance monitoring and enforcement of food safety regulations, emphasising the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in safeguarding public health.

The advisory ended with a strong message: "Say NO to using detergents in fufu and other food production!"
