NAFDAC Shuts Down Unlicensed Chemical Shops in Edo for Safety Violations

Our reporter

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken swift action to close two chemical shops in Benin City, Edo State, for operating without proper licenses and failing to comply with safety regulations.

On Thursday, December 19, NAFDAC officials, backed by a special task force from Asaba, sealed Golden Juliros Nigeria Ltd, located on Evbiemwen Street, and Onebamchi Chemicals at Ramat Park Market. The closures were part of an ongoing enforcement operation targeting unregistered chemical dealers in the region.

Esther Itua, the NAFDAC Coordinator for Edo, explained that the shops had been under surveillance for several years. Despite multiple warnings to adhere to the agency's licensing requirements, they continued to operate without the necessary documentation. "NAFDAC’s role is to regulate and monitor chemicals, ensuring that they are handled safely and responsibly," Itua said.

In line with NAFDAC regulations, chemical dealers must register as companies, provide adequate storage facilities, and employ qualified staff to ensure the safe handling of chemicals. Both businesses were found to be in violation of these essential criteria, placing public safety at risk.

NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing safety standards in the chemical industry and ensuring that all operations comply with the agency's stringent regulatory framework. The agency has warned other unlicensed dealers to regularise their operations or face similar penalties.
