Governor Okpebholo Appoints New Governing Council for Edo University, Iyamho
Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the reconstitution of the institution’s Governing Council. The announcement, made today by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, signals a new chapter for the university as it strives towards academic excellence and innovation.
The newly appointed members of the Governing Council are as follows:
Prof. Olusegun O. Akinyinka, mni – Chairman
Prof. Solomon Owumi – Member
Most Rev. Bishop Donatus Ogun – Member
Prof. (Mrs.) Lilian Salami– Member
Prof. Paul Idornigie, SAN– Member
Dr. (Mrs.) Umemetu Momoh – Member
Prof. Francis Egbokhare – Member
Each of the members brings with them a wealth of expertise across various fields, ensuring a robust leadership team to guide the university into its next phase.
Prof. Olusegun O. Akinyinka, the new Chairman, is a distinguished medical professional with extensive experience in both academia and institutional leadership. He holds an MBBS from the University of Ibadan and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Southampton. Having previously served as Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, as well as the Pioneer Provost of Edo University, Prof. Akinyinka is well-positioned to lead the university’s strategic growth.
Prof. Solomon Owumi, a biochemist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ibadan, brings his expertise in biochemical toxicology and molecular genetics to the Council. His research has focused on areas such as chemical carcinogenesis and molecular toxicology, making him a valuable asset to the university’s scientific community.
The presence of Most Rev. Bishop Donatus Ogun, the Catholic Bishop of Uromi, further enriches the council with spiritual and pastoral leadership, alongside his dedication to community development and social justice.
Prof. (Mrs.) Lilian Salami, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, is an accomplished academic in the field of Home Economics and Nutritional Education. With a wealth of administrative and academic experience, she has held various prestigious positions throughout her career, including at North Dakota State University and the University of Benin.
Prof. Paul Idornigie, SAN, a Professor of Commercial Law, is a respected legal scholar with a focus on International Commercial Arbitration. He currently teaches at Veritas University, Abuja, and his expertise will enhance the legal and business acumen of the council.
Dr. (Mrs.) Umemetu Momoh, an Associate Professor at the University of Benin, brings her expertise in Educational Management and Administration, further strengthening the council's commitment to quality education.
Finally, Prof. Francis Egbokhare, a renowned linguist and Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, rounds out the team. A distinguished academic who has held leadership positions at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Egbokhare's experience will be crucial in advancing the university's academic goals and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Governor has also confirmed that the formal inauguration of the new Governing Council will take place soon, with a date to be announced.
With this diverse and accomplished group at the helm, Edo
University, Iyamho, is expected to make significant strides in academic
development, research, and community impact in the coming years.
