Edo State Targets Illegal Mining with Joint Inspection Effort
In a concerted effort to promote responsible mining practices, tackle environmental degradation, and ensure the accurate distribution of socio-economic benefits, the Edo State Ministry of Mining has teamed up with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to conduct a thorough inspection of illegal mining sites in the Erhua and Iruekpen communities.
The two sites, which were discovered to be operating without necessary permits, were immediately sealed off. These illicit operations were found to be blatantly disregarding both environmental regulations and mining best practices.
Led by the Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, the inspection uncovered alarming evidence of environmental damage and dangerous mining activities. The site at Erhua was situated perilously close to a Federal Road, with excavation occurring directly beneath high-tension power lines, presenting a significant threat to both public safety and the local community. The Iruekpen site was similarly unlicensed and lacked the required consent from relevant authorities, as well as a necessary Environmental Impact Assessment.
Hon. Ijegbai expressed his dismay at the findings, condemning the illegal operations for jeopardising both the environment and the well-being of local residents. He stressed, "These illegal mining activities are not only causing environmental damage but are also putting the safety of our people at risk and threatening our state’s power infrastructure."
Reaffirming the State’s commitment to eradicating such activities, Hon. Ijegbai highlighted the directive from Governor Okpebholo to clamp down on illegal mining across Edo State. "The impact of these operations on both our environment and our communities cannot be overstated. We will continue to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals to root out these illegal activities and push for mining practices that are sustainable and beneficial for both our people and the environment," he added.
The inspection team also included key officials such as Engr. Ganiyu Wasiu Ajibade, Zonal Mines Officer (South-South) of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development; Mr. Eugene Okoloise, Chairman of the Edo State Taskforce on the Protection of Government Property; and Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, Director of Mining at the Edo State Ministry of Mining.
This collaboration marks a critical step towards addressing
the challenges of illegal mining in the State. By working together, the two
ministries aim to strengthen regulatory enforcement and foster responsible
mining practices that will ensure long-term benefits for both the economy and
the environment.
