Edo NUJ Applauds Governor Okpebholo’s Swift Response to Journalists' Attack
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has lauded the intervention of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo following the recent assault on journalists during the Governorship tribunal proceedings in Benin City.
In a joint statement, Dr Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the NUJ Edo State Council, and Secretary Andy Egbon expressed their gratitude to the Governor for his immediate action in addressing the attack. They praised his prompt response as a clear demonstration of his commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of media practitioners.
The attack occurred while journalists were covering the tribunal case, allegedly involving security personnel. In light of this, Governor Okpebholo swiftly directed the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take appropriate action.
The NUJ has also commended the Governor’s stance, noting that his quick intervention underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law. The Union reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for the protection of journalists’ rights and ensuring a safe working environment for media professionals in the state.
"We are immensely grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his decisive intervention, which sends a clear message that such attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State," the statement read.
The Union called for continued collaboration with the Governor and other stakeholders to foster a culture of respect for the media, stressing the essential role of journalists in a healthy democracy.
As Governor Okpebholo remains
committed to protecting media practitioners, the NUJ has pledged its full
support for his administration’s efforts to create a secure and supportive
environment for journalism in Edo State.
