Hackers Compromise National Bureau of Statistics Website, Urged to Ignore Reports
Our report
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that
its official website was compromised by hackers late on Wednesday evening. The
agency made an announcement via social media, urging the public to disregard
any information published on the site until the situation is resolved.
“We regret to inform the public that our website has been
hacked, and we are actively working to restore it. Please refrain from viewing
or acting on any reports or data posted until further notice,” the statement
read.
This security breach comes just a day after the NBS released
a significant report detailing crime trends and public security perceptions in
Nigeria. According to the findings, Nigerians collectively paid a staggering
N2.23 trillion as ransom over a one-year period between May 2023 and April
2024.
The survey also recorded over 51.89 million crime incidents
across the country during the same period. Of these, the north-west region
experienced the highest number of incidents, exceeding 14 million, while the
south-east recorded the lowest with just over six million. The report also
highlighted a concerning trend: crime rates were higher in rural areas, with
over 26 million recorded incidents, compared to approximately 25 million in
urban regions.
NBS officials have reassured the public that the situation
is being addressed and further updates will be provided once the website is
secured.
