EFCC Launches Probe Into Edo Council Financial Records, Invites suspended Chairmen
Our reporter
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has
commenced a detailed investigation into the financial dealings of the 18
suspended Local Government Council chairmen in Edo State.
In a letter dated Dec. 17, 2024, addressed to the Secretary
of the State Government, the anti-graft agency requested the presence of the
suspended council bosses at its Benin Zonal Directorate for questioning. The
EFCC specifically sought comprehensive records relating to staff strength and
payroll as part of its inquiry.
According to the letter, the chairmen of Akoko-Edo, Egor,
Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West Local Government
Councils are to appear on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024. Their counterparts from
Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West are also scheduled to report on
the same day.
Meanwhile, the remaining chairmen from Igueben, Ikpoba-Okha,
Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and
Uhunmwode have been directed to attend interviews on Friday, Dec. 20,
2024.
Reports suggest the suspended officials have sought security
protection to avoid potential arrest during the investigation. The EFCC’s
action is part of a broader effort to scrutinise local government operations
and ensure accountability in public office.
