PDP Forms Taskforce to Oversee Mandate Recovery in Edo Gubernatorial Election
In the wake of the contested September 21 governorship election, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has established a Caretaker Committee tasked with reclaiming what it calls a "stolen mandate" from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The
committee, formed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, will
oversee the party's activities, address internal cohesion, and support the
judicial challenge initiated to overturn the election outcome.
Dr. Tony
Aziegbemi and Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe have been appointed as Chairman and
Secretary, respectively, of this committee, which also includes prominent
figures such as Hon. Harrison Omagbon, Tony Anenih Jnr, Hon. Chris Nehikhare,
and Hon. Segun Saiki. This team will operate under Section 29(2)(b) of the PDP
Constitution, which empowers it to administer the party for a period of up to
90 days or until a new executive is elected.
During the
committee's inauguration, Governor Godwin Obaseki, a central figure in the
dispute, accused the APC of orchestrating a “daylight robbery” of the
democratic process. He expressed confidence in the party's evidence and
commitment to see the case through legal channels, asserting, “Our mandate was
stolen, and we have the proof. We are prepared to ensure justice prevails.”
Obaseki also
addressed his supporters and party leaders, urging them to remain vigilant and
united. He underscored the need for continuous engagement with local
communities and representatives, particularly as the party prepares for the
upcoming tribunal proceedings.
Dr. Asue
Ighodalo, the PDP’s governorship candidate, encouraged the party’s base to
brace for a “challenging but winnable fight.” He expressed optimism about the
forthcoming legal hearings, scheduled to commence in December, and reiterated
the PDP's resolve to counter the APC’s stance.
With the
tribunal hearings around the corner, the PDP has called on its members and the
Edo public to stay informed and engaged in the fight to "restore
democracy" in the state.
