Hunger Crisis: Governor Obaseki Criticizes Tinubu's Economic Policies

In a passionate address to the people of Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki attributed Nigeria's current economic crisis and widespread suffering to the policies implemented by the Tinubu-led Federal Government. 

His speech comes amidst growing public unrest and calls for #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

"My dear good people of Edo State, it has become necessary to address you in the light of the palpable tension and agitation across the country," Obaseki began. He linked the protests to the harsh living conditions Nigerians have endured over the past year, which he attributed to federal policies.

Obaseki criticized the government's removal of fuel subsidies, which he said was executed without proper planning, plunging millions into extreme poverty. He also condemned the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) decision on exchange rate unification, which led to a devaluation of the Naira and exacerbated living costs.

"The Naira significantly lost its value, without strategically thinking of how to cushion the resultant difficulties," he stated. 

Obaseki also highlighted how insecurity and corruption have hampered food production and crude oil output, further straining the economy.

In response to these federal missteps, Obaseki outlined the steps taken by his administration to alleviate local suffering. These measures include raising the minimum wage to N70,000, introducing a free transport scheme, extending free Wi-Fi services, and launching a state-wide feeding program for the vulnerable.

Despite these efforts, Obaseki acknowledged that Edo residents continue to struggle under worsening national economic conditions. He expressed understanding for the protests but urged for peaceful demonstrations to avoid disruption and violence.

"We have it on good authority that some people within the political space are plotting to use the excuse of the protest to cause disruptions and destroy public infrastructure," Obaseki warned. He revealed intelligence reports of plans to incite violence and damage public buildings, including schools and healthcare centers, under the guise of protest.

Obaseki called for vigilance and responsible protest from the public, emphasizing the government's commitment to maintaining law and order. He assured that security forces are on high alert to protect peaceful protesters and warned those with malicious intent that they would face the full weight of the law.

"I enjoin all law-abiding citizens to go about their lawful businesses without fear, as the government remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to work for the growth and progress of our dear State," Obaseki concluded.
