How POS Operator Exposed Three Bank Account Hackers
From Felix Mordi
Three internet fraudsters, whose perfection in the act of hacking into bank accounts and sweeping such accounts clean, have bitten more than they could chew as their latest exploit has landed them in police net.
The suspects, all in their twenties, were arrested at Sango in Ogun State on May 18, 2020 while trying to consolidate on a previous outing to increase their number of victims, and ultimately rake in more money.
Their attempt in this regard became a source of regrets as their next target of victim, a POS operator, proved to be more intelligent.
The syndicate, Adebayo Oluwatosin 23, Obinna Abiogbe 27 and Segun Adefunmi, having successfully hacked into the bank account of one Kolawole Sobande and withdrew the sum of N300,000, one of them approached a POS operator, pretending as a genuine customer.
The "thief" made a request to transfer the sum of #100,000 into the operator's account after which a withdrawal would be made, a deal the operator did not object to.
To oblige the fraudster's request, the operator demanded for his identity card, only to notice an abnormality. The name on the identity card was not in tandem with the one on the bank account, a suspicion he alerted the police about and the suspects were arrested.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, "Upon receipt of the information, the Sango Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Godwin Idehai, detailed his men to the scene and arrested the three fraudsters.
The account owner, Oyeyemi said, was contacted and he confirmed that the sum of N300,000 had been withdrawn from his account, adding that the suspects, during interrogation, confessed being into internet fraud, by
hacking into people’s bank accounts and siphon their money.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered a full scale investigation into the suspects' antecedents as a prelude to arraigning them in a court of competent jurisdiction.
