NYSC: The Modus Operandi of the Scheme
The National Youth Service Corps is an enterprise meant for qualified Nigerian graduates, who have successfully scaled through some thorough academic training in the tertiary school of learning on a regular basis at home and abroad, who as at the time of graduation, not more than 30 years old.
As stated in the preceding chapter, the scheme is aimed at preparing Nigerian graduates for some arduous task of national service and organised such that our graduates are deployed to regions outside their birth place with a mandate to participate in the culture and life of the region so deployed.
The scheme is not however, open to Nigerian graduates who have according to section 17 sub-section (1) of the NYSC decree served in the Armed forces of the federation or the Nigerian Police Force for a period of more than nine months, youths who are, as at the time of graduation more than 30 years old and those that run part time Programmes in the nation tertiary institutions.
Other exemption include, Nigerian graduates who are members of State Security Service, Nigerian Security Organisation, The National Intelligence Agency, Defense Intelligence Service and those who have been conferred with National honours.
However, graduates who qualify for exemption will be issued with an exemption certificate after providing some documents which may be required by the Directorate and completion of exemption form.
The service year covers a period of twelve months, with the orientation camp taking the first month, it Commences with the mobilisation and deployment of our graduates to region outside thier birth place- state of origin. This is in line with the aim of achieving national unity and integration.
Registration of Corp members starts immediately in all the camps followed by orientation and induction course. Activities at the camp come to an end with the posting of Corps Members to places of primary assignment.
The service year comes to an end with the winding up activities which includes: obtaining clearance/evaluation note from places of primary assignment by Corps members and submitting same to the NYSC scretariat. It is immediately followed by passing out parade and presentation of certificates and awards.
