Wike threatens to Sanction Commissioner over School Project

Dissatisfied with the pace of work at the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has threatened to sanction the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku. Wike, who spoke with journalists after inspecting ongoing projects in the state, expressed regret that the state Ministry of Education had failed to reconstruct the school, which was one of the pilot facilities for the introduction of boarding schools in the state. He said the state government had released funds for the execution of the project without getting the desired results. “I am sad at the pace of work at the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta. Where will these children learn when schools resume in September? “I am disappointed in the education commissioner. I have summoned him to explain the slow pace of the work in this school. We will not allow any official to slow down the pace of development of projects.” However, the governor announced that the state was ready to host lawyers for the 2016 Nigerian Bar Association conference. At the Diete Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt, venue of the 2016 NBA National Conference, Wike expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done at the auditorium and the committee rooms of the facility. He said: “Rivers State is ready to host the 2016 NBA National Conference. The Civic Centre is ready and we have all logistics and security arrangements in place.” The governor announced that the NBA Law Centre would also be inaugurated during the NBA conference. Wike hailed the contractors handling road projects in Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre Local Government Areas, noting that the construction of the Port Harcourt Pleasure Park was progressing as planned. He also inspected the ongoing construction of the second Nkpogu Bridge in Port Harcourt Local Government Area.
