The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has admitted responsibility for the escape of two suspects linked to the murder of Hon Justice Azuka, a state lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency.
In a statement released on Thursday by the command’s
spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, CP Orutugu attributed the suspects’ escape
to operational lapses within the force. He assured the public that the police
are taking urgent steps to rectify the situation and enhance security across
the state.
“The Command has taken full responsibility for the operational lapses of our operatives regarding the escape of the two suspects involved in the gruesome murder of Hon Justice Azuka,” the statement read.
The Commissioner further pledged that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure the re-arrest of the fugitives and to bring all individuals connected to the crime to justice.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring public safety and will not rest until the fleeing suspects are apprehended. Among other security measures currently being reinforced, efforts are ongoing to track down the escapees and prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement continued.
While acknowledging the public’s right to free expression, CP Orutugu urged citizens to exercise restraint in their comments and reactions to the case, cautioning against statements that could incite unrest or escalate tensions.
The Anambra State Police Command reassured residents of its
dedication to maintaining law and order and called for cooperation from the
public in efforts to re-arrest the suspects.
