UNIZIK Lecturer Killed by Suspected Car Thieves in Awka, Anambra
A senior lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has been tragically killed in an attack believed to have been carried out by car snatchers. Dr. Osita Fabian Chinedu, a respected academic, was shot dead on the evening of Monday, December 16, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m. along the high-tension area near Aroma Junction, Awka.
Sources
indicate that Dr. Chinedu was confronted by armed assailants who attempted to
steal his vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Corolla, silver in colour, bearing an Enugu
state plate number (UWN 158 AS). Reports suggest that he fought back during the
carjacking attempt, but tragically, he was fatally shot during the altercation.
The attackers then fled the scene with his car.
The Anambra
State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday,
expressing condolences to Dr. Chinedu’s family and colleagues at UNIZIK. In the
statement, Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga assured the public that a thorough
investigation had been launched to track down the perpetrators and bring them
to justice.
“We deeply
regret this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Chinedu’s family,
as well as the entire UNIZIK community," SP Ikenga said. "We are committed
to ensuring that those responsible are apprehended swiftly. We urge anyone with
relevant information about the crime or the stolen vehicle to come forward and
assist with the investigation."
The police
have also appealed to the public to report any sightings of the stolen Toyota
Corolla or any abandoned vehicles matching its description. Authorities can be

Dr.
Chinedu's death has shocked the university community and residents of Awka, as
the incident highlights the growing concern over violent crimes and car thefts
in the region.
