UNIZIK Lecturer Killed by Suspected Car Thieves in Awka, Anambra

A senior lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has been tragically killed in an attack believed to have been carried out by car snatchers. Dr. Osita Fabian Chinedu, a respected academic, was shot dead on the evening of Monday, December 16, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m. along the high-tension area near Aroma Junction, Awka.

Sources indicate that Dr. Chinedu was confronted by armed assailants who attempted to steal his vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Corolla, silver in colour, bearing an Enugu state plate number (UWN 158 AS). Reports suggest that he fought back during the carjacking attempt, but tragically, he was fatally shot during the altercation. The attackers then fled the scene with his car.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, expressing condolences to Dr. Chinedu’s family and colleagues at UNIZIK. In the statement, Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga assured the public that a thorough investigation had been launched to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“We deeply regret this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Chinedu’s family, as well as the entire UNIZIK community," SP Ikenga said. "We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are apprehended swiftly. We urge anyone with relevant information about the crime or the stolen vehicle to come forward and assist with the investigation."

The police have also appealed to the public to report any sightings of the stolen Toyota Corolla or any abandoned vehicles matching its description. Authorities can be contacted through the police control room at 07039194332.

Dr. Chinedu's death has shocked the university community and residents of Awka, as the incident highlights the growing concern over violent crimes and car thefts in the region.
