FG renames UniAbuja to Yakubu Gowon University
Our reporter
The Federal
Executive Council (FEC) has announced its decision to rename the University of
Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honour of the former Head of State,
General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently marked his 90th birthday.
This was
disclosed by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, during a press
briefing held at the State House on Monday, December 16. The meeting, chaired
by President Bola Tinubu, approved the proposal as part of efforts to recognise
Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
Idris
explained that while the FEC has endorsed the renaming, the final approval
rests with the National Assembly, which will deliberate on the proposal in the
coming weeks.
General
Yakubu Gowon, who led Nigeria during a critical period in its history, has been
celebrated for his leadership during the civil war and his commitment to
national reconciliation. The renaming of the university is seen as a tribute to
his enduring legacy.
The
University of Abuja, located in the Federal Capital Territory, is a premier
institution that has played a significant role in Nigeria’s higher education
landscape. Should the National Assembly approve the change, it will mark a new
chapter for the institution under its proposed name.
