PDP Accuses EFCC of Bias, Demands Release of Ex-Governor Okowa Over Alleged Fund Diversion
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the immediate release of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in the misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in derivation funds during his tenure.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, condemned the arrest as an act of political intimidation aimed at suppressing opposition voices.
Okowa, who also served as the PDP vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, reportedly turned himself in at the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office but was subsequently detained.
The EFCC claims Okowa diverted funds allocated to Delta State, though details of the investigation remain undisclosed.
Osadolor criticised the EFCC’s actions, alleging that they represent a targeted attack against opposition leaders, particularly those critical of government policies.
“It is shocking that Okowa, a man of high public standing, who voluntarily went to the EFCC, is being detained without concrete evidence of wrongdoing,” Osadolor said.
He accused the EFCC of conducting a "media trial" rather than an impartial investigation, suggesting that the agency’s actions undermine democratic principles.
He further argued that the detention appears politically motivated, comparing Okowa’s treatment with that of former governors from the ruling party who, despite facing similar allegations, remain free.
Osadolor warned of a potential escalation, speculating that other opposition leaders, such as Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, might also face similar charges.
The PDP official called for reforms within the EFCC to ensure its independence, advocating for the appointment of EFCC leadership by a neutral body rather than the presidency. "The agency should not function as an arm of any political party but rather as an unbiased entity committed to fighting corruption across the board," he stated.
Osadolor emphasised that the PDP does not oppose holding public officials accountable but insists that investigations must be transparent and devoid of political manipulation. He urged the EFCC to prioritize neutrality in its operations to preserve public trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
