Tension In Edo As Accountant General, 2 Others Land In EFCC Net

 Our reporter

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained the State Accountant General of Edo State, Julius Anelu, along with two other senior government officials.

Sources close to Uptown Press NG indicate that the three individuals, previously placed on the EFCC’s watchlist, are being investigated over alleged corruption, with the suspects reportedly cooperating with investigators and providing statements.

According to reliable sources, the EFCC’s Benin Zonal office summoned the Accountant General and his associates for an official briefing before placing them under arrest. As of yet, neither the EFCC nor the Edo State government has made a formal statement regarding the detention.

The arrest has generated considerable tension within the State government, as it comes just days before Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki is set to hand over power to Senator Monday Okpebholo, heightening concerns of a turbulent transition.
The political stakes have also risen with the recent statement by the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, advising Governor-elect Okpebholo to resist any calls to probe the outgoing Obaseki administration.
Ganduje cautioned that such a move might lead to distractions during the early days of the new administration.

Political analysts suggest that the arrests, combined with Ganduje’s advisory, reflect a tense political climate in Edo State as the current administration prepares for transition. However, many are waiting to see how Governor-elect Okpebholo will navigate this pressure as he assumes office amid these recent developments.
