Edo Police Assure Protection for Peaceful Hunger Protesters, Warn Against Violence

Ahead of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1st, 2024, the Edo State Police Command has said that, it is committed to ensuring the safety of peaceful demonstrators while issuing a strong warning against any form of violence.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday in Benin, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, outlined the police's preparedness to secure the protest and specified the conditions under which support would be provided.

CP Adegboye emphasized that the protest, dubbed a "Hunger Protest," would take the form of an “occupation” at Ring Road. He clarified that there would be no roadblocks or processions allowed to prevent disruptions to both public and private activities.

“We all believe and have agreed that the protest will be in the form of an occupation. The venue to occupy is Ring Road, with no blocking of roads. Law-abiding citizens who are not ready to take part in the protest will be allowed to go about their lawful businesses, so people should not be scared,” Adegboye stated.

The police have pledged to protect and support peaceful protesters, even going as far as to provide refreshments if necessary. “On the part of the police, we are going to reciprocate once the protesters are peaceful. We are going to protect them, support them; if possible, we have agreed that even if it is pure water or sweets, we’re going to provide,” CP Funsho Adegboye assured.

While affirming the right of citizens to protest, Adegboye stressed the importance of maintaining peace to ensure the demonstration does not disturb others. He noted that ambulances and first aid personnel would be present at a public park around Ring Road, protected by the police and other security agencies. “To ensure public safety, ambulances and first aid personnel will be stationed at a public park near Ring Road, safeguarded by police and other security agencies,” he noted.

Additionally, CP Adegboye cautioned against the spread of unfounded rumors. He mentioned that a control room had been set up for protest organizers to disseminate accurate information. However, he warned that the police would take decisive action against any individuals or groups attempting to hijack the protest for violent purposes.

The Edo State Police Command's proactive measures aim to balance the right to peaceful protest with the need to maintain public order, highlighting their commitment to protecting citizens while ensuring that daily activities are not disrupted.
