Food Support Programme: Omobayo Flag-off Rice Distribution in Edo North

Edo State Deputy Governor, Engr Godwins Marvellous Omobayo, has on behalf of Governor Godwin Obaseki, formally flag-off the Edo State Food Support Programme in Edo North Senatorial District.

The flag-off ceremony held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cathedral in Auchi, administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event tagged: "Christian Feeding Programme", the Deputy Governor said it was an initiative by the Governor in collaboration  with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as a practical way of reaching out to the vulnerable and less-privileged, particularly the poorest of the poor in our society, while a simillar programme is also being planned for the muslim community across the State.

According to him: "the programme is devoid of politics and designed not just as a palliative measure, but a proactive means of positively touching the lives of the people by the Governor".

Omobayo revealed that the State Government has committed the sum of one billion naira monthly to the programme for the next three months, anchored  on the poverty map designed for executing  the programme.

The Deputy Governor stated that Edo North was the second senatorial flag off with 18,000 bags of 10Kg rice earmarked for distribution to the six local government areas in the district; Edo South  was allocated 27,000 bags and  Edo Central got 15,000 bags, out of the total 60, 000 bags for the entire State.

The Deputy Governor added that implementation of the programme was entrusted in the leadership of CAN for transparency in order to achieve the targeted objective of government response to the prevailing hunger in the land.

He also highlighted other policies and programmes of the present administration, including the free bus ride for citizens of Edo State to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on petrol by the Federal Government.

In his remarks, Chairman, CAN, Edo State Chapter, Apostle-General Irekpono Omoike, who also doubles as Chairman, Edo State Food Support Programme, commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for giving priority to the welfare and well-being of the people.

He said under the first phase of the programme being presently executed,  the implementation committee came up with a poverty map which contains a comprehensive list of beneficiaries of churches in the various communities across Edo North, while describing Obaseki as the "most friendly citizen Governor in Nigeria".

Also speaking, Rev Godsent Erhunmwunse, Senior Special Assistant(SSA) to the Governor on Religious Matters, said the Food Support Programme was a deliberate intervention by Obaseki to cushion the effects of hardship in the land.

According to him: " the programme is a positive response by the Governor to provide palliatives for the poor, hungry and needy in our State".

The ceremony had in attendance, members of the five blocks of churches under CAN, host local government Chairman of Etsako West, Hon Marvellous Zibiri, his Etsako Central counterpart, Hon Solomon Obomegie, amongst others.

Highpoint was the inspection of the two warehouses where the 18,000 bags of rice were stored and cutting of the ceremonial tape by the Deputy Governor, to flag-off the distribution excersise.
