No going back an Edo, Ondo elections INEC insist on electronic media campaign


The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that the COVID-19 Pandemic will not stop it from holding the governorship elections slated for September and October, 2020 in Edo and Ondo States respectively.

 

This was made know   by the Commission’s chairman of media and publicity committee, Mr. Festus Okoye On Monday in an Arise NEWS  breakfast show in Abuja.


On the issue of campaign for the political parties which is expected to commence in June for Edo and July for Ondo, the commissioner asserted that the political parties leaders must ensure that there’s strict observance of the social distancing as the country continues to battle the world ravaging pandemic.

He said: “we all know the challenges the country and indeed the world is facing with the coronavirus and the need to continue to observe the social distancing as a means of combating the spread, so we advise political parties to embrace the online campaign method, using the social media and other technologies”.

On the issue of registration of voters, Mr. Okoye said: “You know, by now we ought to have been doing registration of new voters who just clocked the voter’s age of 18, but sadly, we are unable to do that exercise also because of the pandemic, so we are going to be using the old register, which means a lot of people will be disenfranchised”.

The commissioner lamented that their hands are tied in that regards, but insist that it won’t have any effect on the whole electoral process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States for September 19 and October 10 , 2020 , respectively .
