Highlights of Press Briefing on COVID-19, Ogun State
Good people of Ogun State, read below highlights of my press briefing on COVID-19 today 1st May, with updates on the lockdown, windows, measures, and our response strategies and facilities:
1. I want to start by reminding the good people of Ogun State that we started enforcing the compulsory wearing of face masks today. We have also procured 1 million masks to distribute to traders, transporters, security agents, civil servants and religious groups. If we are to minimally continue some daily activities henceforth, we must protect ourselves against COVID-19 infection.
2. It is necessary I do this, as we will begin to ease our lockdown from Monday 4th May. We will observe relaxation windows on Monday, Wednesday, 6th May and Friday, the 8th. However, this time, the frame will be between 7am (morning) and 5pm (evening). Following this, curfew will be enforced from 8pm (night) to 6am (morning).
3. All educational institutions remain closed, while students can enjoy unpaid access to learning via our televised DigiClass. However, the Head of Service will be issuing a circular in respect to resumption of duty of 30% of civil servants.
4. While social gatherings such as take place in clubs, spas and salons remain banned; traditional occasions such as naming ceremonies and burials may be held, if the 15-person margin is obeyed. However, restaurants may open for and sell take-away meals during the relaxation windows.
5. There is no cause fo alarm, but let's continue to take good caution as we use these windows. We sadly now have 56 confirmed cases, with 8 discharged. This indicates our increased testing capacity - a result of our stationed and mobile molecular laboratories, drive-through & walk-in testing centre, and community testing centres.
6. We have discovered that our cases continue to rise because most are imported. I hereby call on all stakeholders in security, community and religion to be vigilant and report visitors to the Police and health authorities.
7. We have met with market and transport leaders, who have set up committees, to enforce distancing and hygiene recommendations, as I earlier announced.
8. I appreciate our frontline workers, government officials, the private sector and the people for their cooperation and support.
