ASUU Okay Suspension of 400 workers at MOUAU
MICHAEL Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU, Umudike chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has thrown its weight behind the suspension of over 400 workers by the management of the institution, saying the action of the management was proper.
The union also called for a presidential visitation panel to conduct forensic staff and financial audit of the business of the university between March 2011 and February 2016, saying a lot would be uncovered in the university.
The visitation panel, the union said, was long overdue.
According to ASUU, those suspended were workers on temporary appointment which expired after one year as stipulated by law of the university.
A statement by the union and signed by the chairperson, Professor Chinyere Akudo Echendu, and Secretary, Dr. Francis Nkaa, explained that the affected workers’ temporary appointment elapsed after one year in line with the provision authorizing the appointment of temporary staff.
According to the union, though there is provision for appointment of temporary workers, the last management misused the provision by allegedly employing over 1,000 workers on temporary basis.
This, ASUU said prompted them to petition the Federal Ministry of Education, which set up a fact-finding committee whose recommendation confirmed that the power to make temporary appointments was not exercised responsibly by the last management and urged the council then to “revisit the entire process.”
ASUU said the consequences of the unbridled temporary appointment by the last management had adverse effect on the staff as they have since been taking some percentage of their salaries while some vital allowances were stopped.
