FG restates commitment to vocational development

AUCHI- The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Saturday said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to supporting Technical Vocation Education and Training (TVET) as part of its educational agenda for human capital development in the country.
The Nigerian State today is plagued with alarming rate of unemployment especially among the youths with majority lacking the required skills needed in the job market.
The Minister spoke at the 23rd Convocation ceremony of the Auchi Polytechnic in Auchi to commemorate the academic accomplishment of its students.
He urged polytechnics and other institutions in the country to develop appropriate attitude and give career choices that are in harmony with a person’s potentials to enable him engage in lifelong learning and development.
According to him, “the capacity and capability of providing the required changes and innovations that will turn around the abundant industrial and strategic mineral resources in Nigeria into measurable wealth is domiciled in Technical Vocation Education and Training."
He tasked the TVET sector to focus on Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Energy, Advance Materials, Railway Engineering and Technology as well as Aerospace technology.
The minister, represented by Dr. (Mrs) Hilda Onyekwere announced that government on its part has approved six level framework of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ).
He noted that development of National Occupational Standard has been done in construction, Hotel and Tourism, Energy as well as Services.
This, he believes, with the adoption of the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will address the problem of skill shortages among the graduates.
Going forward, the minister said that the government is highly concerned about the poor performance of students at the Senior School Certificate Examination. To this end, she said, efforts are being made to strengthen the Inspectorate Division of the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure compliance with the secondary school curriculum and effective teaching are put in place in our schools.
In addition, "There will be short term courses, workshops, and seminars for teachers to improve on their knowledge and increase their skills."
He commended the Rector and the management team for providing peaceful and enabling environment effective for learning for the past eight years.
While congratulating the graduating students for their academic accomplishment, he charged them to be good ambassadors of the polytechnic by being honest, law abiding, tolerant and patriotic.

Also speaking at the ceremony, former Information and Culture Minister, Prince Tony Momoh while addressing the graduands urged them to take advantage of entrepreneurship as they face the challenges of the real world as the much desired white collar jobs are near extinct today.
He urged them to be agents of positive change and be part of the foundation that will make Nigeria great in years to come.
The former minister said that Nigeria has "special anointing" to remain united and contrary to reports, Nigeria will not collapsed in 2015.
Earlier in her remark, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Philipa Idogho expressed gratitude to the invited guests for taking time out of their busy schedule to grace the occasion.
She said that the polytechnic has recorded tremendous improvement in both infrastructural and human capital development especially in ICT proficiency and deployment, and today it is in an advantaged position to be upgraded to a university of technology.
The Rector urged the graduads to be good ambassadors of the polytechnic and wished them well in their legitimate endeavors.
In total, 2,748 students were awarded the Higher National Diploma, 3,950 students awarded National Diploma while 13 students were awarded professional diploma.
Master Egharevba Festus of Electrical/Electronic department emerged the overall best graduating (HND) student with a total CGPA of 3.90 out of 4.00 points.
Highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of a posthumous honorary fellowship on His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmed Guruza Momoh Ikelebe II, the late Otaru of Auchi.
Other traditional rulers conferred with honorary fellowship include; His Royal Highness Alhaji Andrew Yusuf Dirisu, the Okuokpellage of Okpella and His Royal Highness Alhaji Aliyu Danesi, the Aidonogie of South-Ibie.
